Not just a care home,
part of Petersfield

Being part of the local community matters to us. Many of our residents have lived in and around Petersfield for years, and moving into Downs House should not mean losing touch with the town they know. We get out and about to local cafés, pubs and garden centres, and residents keep up the friendships, routines and hobbies that matter to them.

We believe age should be no barrier to a full and happy life, and our team are here to help each resident keep doing the things they enjoy.

Award-winning gardens

We are proud of our gardens and green spaces at Downs House. There are plenty of peaceful spots for residents to sit and enjoy the fresh air, and the gardens are wheelchair accessible throughout.

Many residents love getting involved in our gardening sessions, growing flowers and vegetables together. Their hard work paid off this year when Downs House won two gold awards in Petersfield in Bloom 2026.

Our team

Our carers work alongside our kitchen and housekeeping teams, and they get to know each resident well, from the help they need with personal care to the little things that make their day.

Sam Thorne, our Home Manager, has worked in care for nearly 30 years. She started out as the weekend tea lady in a care home while she was at college, and has since cared for older people living with dementia, both in care homes and in their own homes, as well as adults with learning disabilities. She worked her way up from carer to manager, and has also trained care staff and managers as an apprenticeship assessor.

Sam holds a BA (Hons) in Health and Social Care and a Level 5 qualification in leadership and management. What matters most to her is a home where residents feel safe and respected, and a team who feel supported to give their very best care.

Food and dining

Good food plays a big part in keeping well, and we take nutrition seriously at Downs House. Our chefs cook fresh meals from scratch every day, planned to give residents a balanced, healthy diet that keeps them strong and well.

There is always a choice at every meal, and the kitchen team get to know each resident’s tastes, along with any special diets, allergies or textures they need. Snacks and drinks are offered throughout the day, and we keep a close eye on how much everyone is eating and drinking.

Mealtimes are relaxed and sociable, with residents eating together in small groups in the dining room or the garden room, or outside on the terrace when the weather is nice.

Activities and days out

Our activities coordinators get to know each resident and plan around what they enjoy, from one-to-one baking to a game of Scrabble in the garden.

We are closely involved with the local community. Residents go on trips to garden centres, cafés and local pubs, and to a local choir group, and families are always welcome at our summer parties and monthly socials.

What families say about Downs House

The team here are absolutely outstanding. The care my mum has received has been nothing short of amazing; they have shown her such love and dignity, not to mention the support shown to us. The guidance and help has been impeccable, making sure my mum's needs are met and we are listened to. Helen and Michelle are a credit to Downs House, and the whole team have been outstanding during the most difficult time as a family. We will be forever grateful for making Mum's last years the happiest they could be, with swimming and choir just to name a couple of the activities Mum loved.

My mother initially came in for respite care and was very worried. The staff made her feel very welcome and did everything to help her feel as settled as possible. The management were extremely helpful when we were looking for somewhere for Mum and I am very happy with our choice. Mum is now staying on here and looks very well and relaxed.

The staff here are all wonderful! They are so welcoming and friendly. After a stay in hospital everyone has been so kind and warm to Dad and encouraged him with his eating and drinking. Lots of fun times are had with different entertainment. Music especially has helped Dad immensely. The food is great and Dad always says how comfy his bed is! Thank you for helping us through a difficult time.

The staff at Downs House have been amazing. My mum came down from Birmingham; she was frail and frightened, she had not walked for 8 weeks and was too scared and weak to try. 7 weeks later, after the care and encouragement of all the staff, Mum is walking every day and is fully immersed in all the amazing activities that take place every day. I have not seen Mum looking so well and so happy for years! Thank you, Downs House.

This care home has been absolutely amazing with my mum since she's come. The staff are incredibly patient, kind, and genuinely care for her wellbeing. There is always a great variety of activities going on to keep residents engaged, and the overall atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It gives me huge peace of mind knowing she is in such safe and capable hands.

My mother was a resident at Downs House for recuperative care for 2 months after an operation. I found the House Manager to be responsive, clear and efficient, as well as kind and understanding of our needs. All the Downs House team, day and night, have been incredibly kind but also practical, working efficiently with visiting Community Care Team staff, and being very responsive when my mother wasn't feeling well. I felt reassured throughout her stay that she was in good hands, and always felt welcomed when I visited. Staff take time to chat both to visitors and residents, and the other residents look content, clean, warm and safe. The food seems good and the rooms are all clean and tidy, as are the communal areas. There is something going on most days for residents. I would be happy to recommend Downs House to others, and would have no hesitation in bringing my mother back for a longer or permanent stay if that became necessary.

Mum has been at Downs House now well over a year. She is settled and enjoys being well looked after. The staff are caring and efficient, even if Mum is having a difficult day. Mum celebrated her 90th birthday today, and she enjoyed the fuss and the delicious cake. Thank you, Downs House.

Overall I am very happy with my mum's care. The food is really good and the care is great. It has taken her a while to settle in, but 3 months on she is getting used to her new home and accepting it. It's just up the road from my home, which is great. The staff are all very patient and understanding with her, and very friendly and welcoming every time I come in. Overall I am very pleased with the care Mum gets.

When we first took my brother to take a look at Downs House he was amazed that such a place existed and delighted that he was going to be staying there. I cannot speak highly enough about the care and attention given to him during the 2 months he was there. It was a challenging time for all, as he was taken ill and admitted to hospital for a while, and extra equipment was put in place to look after him on his return. The Manageress and every member of staff were so caring and kind. We were welcomed with open arms on each visit and every carer knew exactly how my brother was that day. With a library, coffee bar, TV room, orangery and dining areas, the atmosphere is warm, friendly and uplifting. My brother was very happy enjoying the varied range of entertainment and activities when he was able. Downs House is in a beautiful country setting, with terraces on which to dine under the magnificent chestnut tree, and inside it is welcoming and homely. Wonderful.

Gramps has been here for two years, and he has vastly improved since he joined the home. The staff are super loving, caring and fun. He gets involved with many weekly activities (dancing and singing are his favourites), and he also takes trips out weekly. The manager is incredible; she is very caring, protective and fun, and you can be assured any issue will be swiftly resolved. All in all, this is a beautiful place for your loved one to be taken care of!
